Social Networking and the Surprising Virb
Social networking sites are popping up like mushrooms in a damp basement. Companies are trying to take advantage of the community by providing “new and innovative” ways to connect with each other – which is another way of saying “catching up with the true viral nature of early-adopters”.
In any case, there is one space online that has caught my attention. Virb is now picking up some major speed, MySpace is picking up some major trash, and personal networking is basically starting to coalesce into a real marketing medium.
What’s next, and how are we going to use it, abuse it, and eventually turn it into something so deformed and grotesque - riddled with porn, spam, and subliminal, subversive advertising — that it becomes uncool, and all of the truly hip taste-makers leave for greener pastures? Or, is Virb going to be the shining gem in the sea of Me To’s? I certainly hope so. This is one of the most well put together, elegant social networking site I’ve really ever seen.
But in the end, we shall see. More to come on this tip.
